The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has confirmed that one of its officers was shot during an anti-galamsey operation in the Bono Region on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
The incident took place along the Subinkurom-Kyeremasu stretch in the Dormaa Central Municipality, when armed assailants hiding in the bushes opened fire upon spotting the NAIMOS team, prompting a gunfight.
One officer sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and was immediately transported to St. Matthew Catholic Hospital at Ampenkuro, where he is currently receiving treatment and responding well.
During the exchange, one of the attackers, identified as Abuu Ibrahim, was shot and pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
In a statement, NAIMOS reiterated its commitment to combating illegal mining, despite the risks posed by armed resistance, and urged stakeholders to continue supporting its operations.
The Secretariat assured the public of its determination to protect Ghana’s natural resources and maintain pressure on illegal mining activities.
