A nine-month-old baby has died following a dog attack in Rogiet, Monmouthshire, Gwent Police confirmed.
Emergency services were called to a property on Crossway at around 18:00 GMT on Sunday, where officers and paramedics attempted to assist the child. The dog involved was seized and removed from the scene, police said.
Authorities are working to determine the breed of the dog, and no arrests have been made so far.
Chief Superintendent John Davies said: “Officers are on scene and will be making further inquiries as the investigation progresses.”
Local residents described being in utter disbelief at the child’s death. The quiet residential street was reportedly filled with police cars and ambulances at the time of the incident, leaving the community in shock.
By 22:00 GMT, the police cordon had been lifted. Most emergency vehicles had departed, replaced by scenes of crime investigation teams, with two officers remaining at the property for ongoing security.
Crossway, normally a quiet street, was largely silent except for the sounds of cars on the nearby M4 motorway and trains along the South Wales to London line.
