Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has set a one-month deadline to halt the unauthorized commercial sale of water from fire hydrants nationwide.

The company’s Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu, announced a ban on the use of fire hydrants during an interview, citing the alarming rise in illegal water connections and misuse, especially by water tankers.

A newly deployed task force began inspections on August 5 to identify illegal connections and monitor all commercial water supply points. Mr. Mutawakilu warned that if the current trend continues — with most hydrant users found to be in breach — tougher measures, including suspending tanker services in affected areas, may be implemented.

By the end of the month, GWL expects to take decisive action based on the data collected to protect water distribution integrity across Ghana.
