The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has officially handed over 17 gold bars, valued at approximately $1.7 million, to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) at a brief ceremony held at the Ministry of the Interior in Accra.

The gold was intercepted by officers from NACOC’s Upper East Regional Command at the Paga Border Post, as two Burkinabe nationals attempted to smuggle the consignment out of the country.

The suspects have since been charged with offences related to the illegal transportation and trading of gold.

Speaking at the event, Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, reiterated the Ministry’s unwavering support for GoldBod’s mandate to regulate and manage Ghana’s gold resources effectively.

Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, expressed appreciation to NACOC for its diligence and commitment to protecting the nation’s mineral wealth.

He emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among all security and regulatory bodies to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources.

The handover ceremony was attended by Mrs. Doreen Annan, Chief Director at the Ministry of the Interior; Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, Director-General of NACOC; and senior representatives from both NACOC and GoldBod.
