Renowned Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has voiced deep concern over the stagnant state of Ghana’s movie industry, saying it is wasting the talents of countless creatives who could be thriving elsewhere—particularly in Nigeria.

In a passionate Instagram post on July 15, 2025, Sarfo contrasted Ghana’s sluggish production pace with Nigeria’s booming film scene. According to her, Ghanaian producers struggle to even shoot one movie a year, while in Nigeria, filmmakers are producing films “back to back, non-stop.”

“Honestly, if you’re in Nigeria as an actor, you’d realize that you’ve REALLY WASTED YOUR TALENT back in Ghana,” she wrote.

Sarfo described the situation as “crazy” and “disheartening,” questioning what had gone wrong in an industry that was once considered a regional powerhouse.

“What has happened to our industry??? Talents are BEING WASTED. Mercy Lord,” she added.

In a caption accompanying her post, the Efiewura and The Perfect Picture: Ten Years Later star revealed that friends and fans have long told her she was underutilizing her talent by remaining in Ghana.

“This MUST be looked at, seriously. There are lots and lots of talents wasting in Ghana year by year,” she emphasized, adding that she constantly recommends fellow Ghanaian actors to contacts abroad because she knows “what we have” in the country.

Sarfo praised the support structures available in Nigeria, noting that many Ghanaian actors could excel if given the same resources and platforms.

“There are people to PUSH THEM [in Nigeria]. But in our case… Oh my HEART,” she lamented.

Reflecting on better times, Sarfo said Ghana’s film industry used to lead the region and wonders what led to the current decline.

“It was the other way round just some few years ago. So WHAT HAPPENED? Or is it the NUMBERS, or WHAT?”

She concluded by urging actors to take initiative and consider self-producing projects to stay active and visible.

Gloria Sarfo, who won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2020 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), has long been an advocate for the growth and revitalization of Ghana’s film sector. Her recent comments have sparked renewed dialogue about the challenges facing the industry—and the urgent need for solutions to retain local talent.
