Former flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, is calling on party leaders to urgently confront internal challenges following their disappointing performance in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on April 29, Agyepong emphasized that the party must take a hard look at itself and implement meaningful reforms to regain the confidence of disillusioned supporters.

He noted that senior party members are well aware of what went wrong and should take the lead in driving change. “Our priority now should be repairing the internal cracks. Those of us who have been around long enough understand the issues. It’s time to fix them,” he said.

Agyepong recommended that a small group of seasoned party figures should have convened behind closed doors to critically assess the findings of the post-election report chaired by Professor Mike Oquaye.

He believes this could have yielded practical solutions to re-energize the base.

Crucially, Agyepong pointed to the historically low voter turnout in the NPP’s strongholds — the Ashanti and Eastern regions — as a stark signal of dissatisfaction within the party’s core base.

“A significant portion of our loyal supporters didn’t vote. That should tell us something’s wrong. Winning back their trust must now be our mission,” he urged.
