Adum PZ Inferno: Fire Hydrant Near Otumfuo Statue Was Not Functioning – GNFS

Firefighters struggled to contain the raging flames as a crucial hydrant failed, forcing them to search for alternative water sources.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has revealed that a critical fire hydrant near the Otumfuo Statue was out of service during the devastating fire that engulfed parts of Adum PZ on Friday, March 21, 2025.

According to ADO1 Atta Arhin Mensah, Ashanti Regional Deputy Communication Officer of the GNFS, the malfunctioning hydrant severely hampered firefighting efforts, allowing the flames to spread rapidly and destroy multiple shops.

Speaking on Lawson TV/Radio Ghana Se Sen with Kwame Tanko, ADO1 Mensah disclosed that firefighters arrived at the scene around 5 AM, only to realize that the nearest hydrant was not working. This forced them to search for alternative water sources, causing delays in containing the raging inferno.

To combat the blaze, he said reinforcements were called from Atonsu, Atwima, Tech, Greater Kumasi, and Ejisu. Eventually, the hydrant began functioning after pressure was mounted on the Ghana Water Company.

He lamented the logistical challenges faced by the fire service, stating, “When it comes to logistics, we are handicapped.”

Minister’s Outburst Demoralized Firefighters

Reacting to a statement by Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, ADO1 Mensah noted that the Minister’s comments were demoralizing to firefighters who had been battling the fire since dawn.

A viral video captured the visibly agitated Minister confronting fire service personnel, demanding explanations for their inability to control the blaze sooner. “Why did you lie to me? You told me you had enough water, so why is this tank empty? Move it out of here!” he was heard shouting.

Despite the criticisms, ADO1 Mensah emphasized that the focus should not be on blame but on identifying and resolving systemic failures to prevent future disasters.

“There is no time for blame games. What we must do is identify the shortfalls and ensure such terrible and horrific outbreaks do not happen again,” he stated.
