40,000 Fight for 7,000 Teaching Jobs as GES Recruitment Portal Closes
Education Minister says only best-qualified applicants will be selected amid high demand and limited clearance

- Over 40,000 applicants compete for 7,000 teaching vacancies
- GES recruitment portal closed after hitting application limit
- Selection to be based on merit due to budget constraints
More than 40,000 applicants have applied for just 7,000 teaching vacancies under the Ghana Education Service (GES) recruitment exercise, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has revealed.
Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of e-Learning Africa, the Minister explained that although Ghana continues to face a shortage of teachers, financial clearance was obtained for only 7,000 new recruits.
He noted that the recruitment process was conducted transparently through an online portal, but it was closed after applications surged beyond 40,000 to prevent system overload.
According to him, if funding had allowed, the country would have been able to recruit as many as 50,000 teachers to address staffing gaps across schools nationwide.
However, due to budget limitations approved by the Ministry of Finance, only 7,000 positions were made available. He assured that selection will be based strictly on merit after a careful screening process.
“If resources were available, we should be recruiting up to 50,000 teachers across the country, but due to budgetary constraints, we are unable to do that,” he said. “The Ministry of Education received clearance to recruit 7,000 teachers. As the portal opened and applications reached 40,000, it was closed. The best 7,000 will be selected after careful assessment.”
The Ministry has assured applicants that the process will be fair and transparent as it works to fill the approved vacancies.
