The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has directed the immediate evacuation of all communities downstream of the Weija Dam after authorities opened all spill gates to release excess water that has exceeded safe operating levels.

Ghana Water Limited confirmed on Thursday, May 28, 2026, that the dam’s water level had risen above the maximum threshold of 48 feet, making controlled spillage necessary to safeguard the dam’s structural integrity and prevent a possible disaster.

The release of water has already caused flooding in several downstream areas, submerging homes and shops and forcing residents to move their belongings to safer locations.

Speaking to journalists in Accra, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo said the decision was taken after continuous heavy rainfall and increasing inflows into the dam.

She noted that the Regional Security Council will carry out an inspection to assess the extent of damage and ensure affected residents are evacuated.

Ghana Water Limited explained that controlled spillage is a standard safety procedure during the rainy season, especially when water levels exceed 45 feet, to reduce pressure on the dam.

The company also warned that forecasts from the Ghana Meteorological Agency indicate continued heavy rainfall upstream, which could further increase inflows. It added that the spillage may continue for several months depending on rainfall patterns.

Residents living along the downstream river course have been strongly advised to evacuate immediately to protect lives and property.

Ghana Water Limited also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and local assemblies to clear structures and obstructions along waterways to improve drainage and reduce flood risks.

The Regional Minister assured that the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council is working with all stakeholders to ensure public safety throughout the rainy season, urging calm and cooperation as monitoring continues.
