(VIDEO) Minority Criticizes Government Over New Electricity and Water Tariff Increases

Opposition says latest electricity and water tariff hikes contradict government's pledge to reduce the cost of living.

Story Highlights
  • Minority criticizes tariff hikes.
  • Electricity up 3.49%, water up 0.85%.
  • Government accused of broken promises.

The Minority in Parliament has strongly criticized the government following the latest utility tariff adjustments announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), accusing the administration of failing to deliver on its promises to ease the cost of living for Ghanaians.

Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, described the tariff increases as a setback for consumers already facing economic challenges.

The PURC announced a 3.49 percent increase in electricity tariffs and a 0.85 percent increase in water tariffs, both set to take effect from July 1, 2026.

According to Mr. Adomako-Mensah, the new tariff adjustments contradict assurances given by the government during the 2024 election campaign that utility costs would be reduced under its administration.

He argued that despite those promises, Ghanaians are now paying more for electricity than they were when the current administration assumed office on January 7, 2025. He further described the tariff hikes as evidence that the government’s commitments on reducing the cost of living have not been fulfilled.

The Minority has therefore called on the government to reconsider policies that place additional financial burdens on households and businesses amid ongoing economic pressures.
