Two people have died and five others sustained injuries following a road accident at Third Ridge Junction on the Accra–Cape Coast Highway in Cape Coast.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 28, adding to growing concerns about road safety in the Central Region.
Emergency response and casualties
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded to the scene after receiving a distress call. The Central Regional Commander, ACFO1 Merinda Mary Atsigah-Mensah, urged motorists to exercise caution, attributing many accidents to indiscipline on the roads.
The collision involved a Toyota Corolla and a HOWO tipper truck. Firefighters worked to rescue the Corolla driver, who was trapped in the vehicle. The victim was transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
A second fatality was confirmed at the scene, while five injured victims were taken to the same hospital for treatment.
Possible cause of the accident
Preliminary reports indicate that the Toyota Corolla was heading toward Accra when the driver noticed a pickup vehicle overtaking dangerously and attempting to merge into the lane of an oncoming truck.
In an effort to avoid a collision, the Corolla driver reportedly slowed down. The tipper truck, travelling in the opposite direction, is said to have swerved to avoid the overtaking vehicle but lost control while returning to its lane, resulting in a head-on crash.
Renewed safety concerns
Authorities have reiterated calls for stricter adherence to traffic regulations, warning that reckless driving continues to contribute significantly to road accidents across Ghana.
Despite ongoing improvements in road infrastructure, road traffic incidents remain a leading cause of fatalities nationwide, prompting renewed appeals for discipline among drivers.
