The Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (Ibrahim Baba Bukari) says many party supporters who stayed away from the polls during the 2024 general elections are now expressing regret, blaming what he describes as economic mismanagement under the governing National Democratic Congress.

Speaking in an interview with Lawson TV/Radio on “Se Sen” hosted by Kwame Tanko on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Chairman Bukari argued that voter apathy within the NPP base significantly contributed to the party’s electoral defeat.

He claimed that with the NDC now in power, some supporters who did not vote in 2024 are reassessing their decision due to worsening economic conditions.

According to him, despite being in opposition, the NPP continues to show strong grassroots appeal, particularly in Techiman and other parts of the Bono East Region, where new registrations are reportedly increasing.

“The party is still attractive in Techiman… even in opposition, people are still registering massively, and it shows the NPP is loved by many,” he said.

Chairman Bukari further insisted that the party has strong numerical strength and is likely to gain even more supporters ahead of the next election cycle.

He revealed that the NPP has recorded a significant influx of new members in Bono East, describing the development as “overwhelming” and a sign of growing confidence in the party.

He attributed the renewed interest to dissatisfaction with the current economic situation, arguing that rising cost of living, challenges faced by cocoa farmers, and intermittent power supply issues are affecting public sentiment.

“Things are still expensive, cocoa farmers are crying, and dumsor is in the system,” he stated.

On internal party matters, Bukari urged unity among executives, particularly in the Ashanti Region, which he described as the party’s stronghold. He warned that internal misunderstandings could have ripple effects on other regions, including Bono East.

He expressed confidence that with unity and organisation, the NPP could win more parliamentary seats in the 2028 elections.

“If we are united, we will capture more seats from the NDC in Bono East,” he said.

Chairman Bukari also assured that challenges encountered during party registration processes would be resolved, insisting that the exercise has largely been smooth so far.
