Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed claims that President John Dramani Mahama plans to pursue a third term, calling the allegations baseless.

The comments come in response to assertions by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggesting that President Mahama secretly intends to seek another term, despite the constitutional two-term limit.

These claims were fueled by social media posts from some NDC supporters encouraging him to remain in office beyond two terms.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, December 9, Kwakye Ofosu said, “The NPP have whipped themselves into needless frenzy.

President Mahama has clearly stated that he will respect the Ghanaian Constitution.

He is a committed democrat—there is no third term for him or anyone else under the law. Social media chatter does not change that fact.”

He urged the opposition to avoid unnecessary speculation, adding, “The President has expressed no interest. Any talk about a third term is an absurd fantasy and a waste of everyone’s time.”

President Mahama had previously reaffirmed his commitment to the constitutional two-term limit on August 27, 2025, stating that stepping aside for the 2028 elections would help enforce fiscal discipline and prevent election-year overspending that often triggers economic crises.

During a state visit to Singapore, he also criticised the recurring tendency of incumbent governments to sidestep fiscal safeguards for electoral advantage.
