Asenso-Boakye Petitions Mahama to Reconsider New Accra-Kumasi Expressway Plan

Bantama MP and former Roads Minister Francis Asenso-Boakye urges President Mahama to abandon plans for a new Accra-Kumasi expressway, warning it could derail ongoing dualisation efforts that are already yielding results and nearly 60% complete.

Story Highlights
  • Over 100km of Accra-Kumasi road already dualised; 46km more under construction
  • Asenso-Boakye warns new expressway plan lacks feasibility, design, and funding
  • Cites 1992 Constitution to advocate for project continuity over abandonment

Bantama MP and former Roads and Highways Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has petitioned President John Mahama to reconsider plans for a new six-lane Accra–Kumasi expressway, warning that it may disrupt the substantial progress already made on the current dualisation project.

In a detailed letter to the President, Asenso-Boakye revealed that over 100km out of the 240km stretch have already been dualised, with an additional 46km under active construction—including bypasses at Anyinam, Osino, Enyiresi, and Konongo. Only 94km remain, according to data from the Roads Ministry.

The MP argued that starting an entirely new expressway—which lacks a final design, feasibility study, cost estimate, or secured funding—would not only be impractical, but could also breach Article 35(7) of the Constitution, which mandates continuity in state development projects.

Citing his own expertise, Asenso-Boakye stressed that the new project’s proposed timeline—completion in under three years—is unrealistic and would waste resources already invested. He dismissed claims of cost overruns on the existing dualisation as normal in large infrastructure projects and emphasized they could be resolved without scrapping the current initiative.

“This is not about partisanship,” he wrote. “It’s about continuity, value for money, and responsible governance. I respectfully urge you to consolidate our gains instead of discarding them.”
