Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has announced the establishment of a GH₵50 million National Research Fund, sourced from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), to support research and promote evidence-based educational policies in Ghana.

Speaking at the ADEA Triennial Education Summit, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the government’s recognition of research as a driving force for educational reform.

“Government is recognising the power of research, so we have set up a National Research Fund with a seed of GH₵50 million from GETFund to support research institutions and drive evidence-based educational policy,” she stated.

The Vice President explained that the fund will empower universities and research institutions to generate credible data and insights to guide national education strategies and policy-making.

She noted that this initiative aligns with government’s broader goal of strengthening Africa’s education systems and eliminating learning poverty by 2035.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further underscored the importance of improving the fundamentals of education through results-oriented initiatives such as the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP).

“Through GALOP, we are improving fundamental learning and promoting result-based reforms,” she said.

Emphasising self-reliance, she urged African nations to utilise their own resources, talents, and innovations to address the continent’s challenges.

“Africa should rely on her own resources to solve her problems,” she added, calling for greater investment in local expertise and research capacity.
