Ghana Armed Forces to Pay 5-Year Gratuity Arrears to Retired Personnel
GAF begins phased payout of long-overdue gratuity for officers and soldiers
- Government approves five-year gratuity arrears for retired GAF personnel under CI 129.
- Payments to be made in four instalments from February 2026 to December 2027.
- First phase benefits 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers, with future retirements aligned to the updated formula.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced that the government has approved the payment of five years’ gratuity arrears to retired personnel under Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.
In a press release from the Department of Public Relations at General Headquarters, Burma Camp, Accra, the GAF explained that the approval follows discussions between the Military High Command and the Ministries of Finance and Defence to resolve a long-standing disagreement over the gratuity formula under CI 129.
The consultations have resulted in a two-year phased implementation plan. Retired personnel from November 2020 onwards will receive arrears based on the updated formula. Payments will be made in four instalments between February 2026 and December 2027, with the first tranche set for Friday, February 27, 2026.
The first phase will benefit 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers, and the Armed Forces confirmed that all future retirements will be processed in full accordance with CI 129.
This development brings closure to an issue unresolved since 2020 and ensures that affected personnel and future retirees receive their full entitlements. The Military High Command thanked the government for its support in resolving the matter.
