President John Dramani Mahama has announced that road construction projects halted across the country will soon resume, following the completion of an audit by the Auditor-General into contracts awarded by the previous administration.
Speaking at Jackson Park in Koforidua during his Eastern Regional Thank You Tour on Sunday, July 20, the President said the findings have cleared the way for contractors to return to work under his administration’s Big Push Agenda, which focuses on revamping critical infrastructure.
“The Auditor-General has completed the review. Contractors will return to site, but any found to have taken double payments from both the Road Fund and the Finance Ministry will face sanctions,” Mahama declared.
President Mahama stressed that the government will not tolerate financial irregularities, particularly cases where contractors were overpaid or paid by multiple sources for the same work.
Meanwhile, the President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, Nene Sakite II, praised Mahama for his strong start within his first 120 days in office and encouraged him to maintain the momentum.
“As the saying goes, good is not good enough where better is possible,” he said, pledging traditional authorities’ full backing in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
