NSB Scandal: Mildred Donkor Asks Court for New Lawyer to Replace Atta Akyea
Co-accused in high-profile NSB trial asks court for new legal representation, distancing herself from NPP-affiliated counsel.

- Mildred Donkor rejects NPP lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea as her legal representative
- She requests new counsel in the GH¢49 million NSB theft case
- The case involves former NSB boss, his wife, and Advantage Solutions Ltd
There was a surprising development in the ongoing National Signals Bureau (NSB) scandal on Friday, July 18, when Mildred Donkor, one of the key accused persons, openly declined legal representation from prominent lawyer and NPP Member of Parliament, Samuel Atta Akyea.
Appearing before the court, Mrs. Donkor informed the presiding judge that she no longer wished to be represented by Mr. Atta Akyea, who has so far served as counsel for all accused persons in the GH¢49 million theft case.
“She told the judge she did not have a lawyer and wanted a new one assigned to her,” reported Bernice Bessey, a journalist from The Chronicle who was present in court.
“It was a mixed reaction for Mr. Atta Akyea in court,” she added in an interview.
The case involves serious allegations against former NSB Director-General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, his wife Mildred Donkor, and Advantage Solutions Limited, who have been charged by the Attorney General for stealing GH¢49 million, in violation of Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Mrs. Donkor’s unexpected request could indicate a shift in legal strategy or a possible divergence of interests among the co-accused, as the high-stakes trial continues to unfold.
Legal observers say the decision may have broader implications for the defense’s cohesion moving forward, especially given the political profile of Mr. Atta Akyea, who is also a senior figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The court is expected to respond to Mrs. Donkor’s request at the next hearing.
