At least 28 people have died following a landslide at an illegal gold mining site in Bengo Province, authorities have confirmed.

The incident occurred on Saturday at an artisanal mining site in northwestern Angola and is being described as one of the deadliest accidents linked to illegal mining activities in the country.

According to a statement from the province’s civil protection and fire service, four people were rescued from the scene, while search and rescue operations have since been completed.

Authorities said the victims were between the ages of 16 and 35.

Illegal mining in Angola has traditionally been associated with the diamond sector. However, the country’s efforts to diversify its mining industry have led to a rise in artisanal mining activities involving other minerals, including gold.

Angola, one of Africa’s leading diamond producers, has increasingly shifted focus toward metals such as copper and gold amid falling diamond prices and growing competition from synthetic diamonds.

The latest tragedy has renewed concerns over safety conditions at illegal mining sites, where workers often operate without proper equipment, regulation or environmental safeguards.
