At Least 13 Killed in Landslide After Heavy Rains in Kenya’s Rift Valley
Torrential rains trigger deadly landslide in Kenya’s Rift Valley as rescue teams race to find missing victims

- 13 confirmed dead and dozens rescued in Kenya’s Rift Valley landslide
- Military helicopters deployed to aid rescue operations amid ongoing rains
- Climate change blamed for rising cases of floods and landslides across East Africa
At least 13 people have died and several others remain missing after a devastating landslide struck Kenya’s Rift Valley early Saturday morning following intense overnight rains.
Authorities said 19 survivors were rescued from the rubble, while rescue teams, aided by military and police helicopters, continue to search for more victims trapped under the debris, according to Elgeyo-Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge and Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen.
Kenya has experienced a series of floods and landslides in recent years, with experts attributing the worsening weather events to climate change. In 2024, more than 60 people lost their lives in similar disasters across central Kenya.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Uganda, at least 13 people were killed this week after heavy rains triggered mudslides in the country’s eastern region, the Uganda Red Cross confirmed.
