The Asutifi North Member of Parliament, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has been barred by the court from leaving the Greater Accra Region without notifying investigators as part of his bail conditions.

Addo faces provisional charges of assault on a public officer, unlawful damage, and rioting with weapons, following his alleged involvement in the Hwidiem galamsey clash.

Arraigned on Tuesday, 4th November 2025, the MP was granted GH¢150,000 bail and is required to report to investigators every two weeks until further notice or the commencement of his trial. The court also cautioned him against any conduct that could obstruct the ongoing investigation.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Alex Odonkor, argued that the case has attracted national attention and is being handled by CID Headquarters. They expressed concerns that Addo’s influence could interfere with the investigation, citing videos circulating on social media allegedly showing the incident, and warned of potential witness or evidence tampering.

The defence opposed the request for remand, emphasizing Addo’s constitutional right to be presumed innocent. They highlighted his family responsibilities, including caring for a newborn, and assured the court of his permanent residence in Accra and full cooperation with authorities.

The court granted bail under strict conditions, ordering Addo to reappear on 1st December 2025. Several other accused persons, including Zakaria Yakubu and one Alex, remain at large.

Background:
The charges relate to an alleged obstruction of an anti-illegal mining operation by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) near Bronikrom–Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region. The incident on Saturday, 1st November 2025, involved a confrontation between youth and a NAIMOS task force. Addo denies instigating the attack, stating that he was present to defuse tensions and maintain public order.
