National Cathedral Project Still on Track – Board Debunks Abandonment Claims
Board reaffirms commitment to the National Cathedral project amid false reports and stalled progress.

- Board denies claims that Cathedral site is being converted into a Cultural Convention Centre
- Project paused due to funding and political challenges; only 8% completed
- New strategy in development to revive and complete the project through broad collaboration
The Board of Directors of the National Cathedral of Ghana has dismissed reports that the project site is being repurposed into a Cultural Convention Centre.
In a statement issued on July 9, 2025, following an emergency meeting on July 7, the Board clarified that no government agency has officially announced any change to the project’s original purpose. Executive Director Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah emphasized that the site remains under the legal control of the National Cathedral of Ghana and all plans still align with its intended religious and cultural functions.
Dr. Opoku-Mensah reiterated that the Cathedral is meant to serve as a national place of worship and host major state religious events. He pointed to the recent declaration of July 1 as Ghana’s National Day of Prayer as a strong sign of continued government commitment.
Besides its spiritual role, the Cathedral is envisioned as a major cultural and tourism hub, with features such as a Bible Museum, banquet hall, garden, restaurant, library, and conference centre.
About 8% of the construction had been completed before it was stalled due to financial constraints and political controversies that affected fundraising.
Addressing concerns about accountability, the Board cited a Deloitte audit that verified all public funds were used appropriately, based on contracts and confirmed work done.
The Board announced plans for a new strategy to complete the project through a partnership between the state, church, and civil society, with the aim of removing political tension and encouraging nationwide support.
The public has been urged to ignore false claims and support efforts to complete the Cathedral, which the Secretariat calls “a family house for all Christians” and a unifying national symbol.
