Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has proposed the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in Ghana’s judicial system to help assign judges to cases more fairly and transparently.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie argued that AI could play a key role in strengthening public trust and minimizing human bias in the empanelling of judges.
He explained that while the current manual system works, it occasionally breeds suspicion among litigants and lawyers about how judicial panels are selected.
“We should be able to consider empanelling an AI panel of judges. AI will be a very good thing for empanelling,” he suggested, adding that such innovation would bring greater transparency and efficiency to the process.
His remarks came during a high-profile vetting session following the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo — an event that has stirred public debate and prompted the Minority in Parliament to boycott the vetting proceedings.
