  • Offences include phone smuggling and AI-assisted cheating
  • Suspects handed over to police for investigation

Seven teachers have been arrested for engaging in examination malpractice during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the West African Examinations Council has confirmed.

The arrests were carried out through the Council’s monitoring systems and intelligence gathered from whistleblowers.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC’s National Office, disclosed that three of the suspects were picked up in the Central Region, two in the Bono Region, and two in the Ashanti Region.

Preliminary investigations revealed a range of infractions, including the smuggling of mobile phones into examination halls. Some of the teachers reportedly solved questions using external platforms, while others fed exam questions into AI tools such as ChatGPT. In some cases, snapshots of examination questions were taken and circulated.

All suspects have since been handed over to the police for further investigations.

WAEC Response:
Mr. Kapi commended whistleblowers for their role in exposing the malpractice and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examinations.

He added that measures had been implemented to ensure the smooth and timely distribution of question papers and answer booklets across all centres.

Despite isolated challenges, WAEC indicated that the overall conduct of the examination remains largely successful.
