  • Freedom of worship does not cover harmful statements.

A private legal practitioner, Lawyer Kwasi Gyamfi Boadu, has cautioned that pastors may face legal consequences if public prophecies result in harm to individuals or couples.

He explained that although prophecy is part of religious expression, it becomes legally actionable when it causes measurable damage such as loss of employment, relationships, or reputational harm. In such cases, affected persons may have grounds to pursue defamation claims or seek damages.

His comments follow an incident in which a pastor allegedly delivered a public prophecy about a man in church, claiming his partner was involved with two other ministers. The statement, made before the congregation, reportedly caused embarrassment and distress.

According to Lawyer Boadu, the law is concerned not with the spiritual content of prophecy, but with its real-world consequences. He noted that while freedom of worship is protected, it does not extend to statements that injure another person’s social standing or livelihood.

He further urged the public to be cautious about the religious spaces they attend, stressing that public pronouncements in church settings can sometimes lead to unintended personal and legal repercussions.
