The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced that Ghana surpassed its national reforestation target in 2025, planting more than 31 million trees under the Tree for Life Initiative.

Speaking at the launch of the 2026 Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative on Friday, June 5, the minister described the achievement as a major milestone in the country’s efforts to restore degraded landscapes and promote environmental sustainability.

According to him, the 2025 exercise exceeded the national target of 30 million trees, thanks to the collective efforts of government agencies, traditional authorities, schools, religious organisations, civil society groups, development partners, local communities, and the private sector.

“I am pleased to announce that in the 2025 edition of the Tree for Life Initiative, we planted over 31 million trees, surpassing our target of 30 million nationwide through the collective efforts of all stakeholders,” he said.

Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah noted that the success of the initiative highlights the impact of national collaboration in addressing environmental challenges and advancing Ghana’s reforestation agenda.

Looking ahead to the 2026 edition, he said the focus will shift from simply increasing planting numbers to ensuring the survival and growth of planted trees through proper maintenance and monitoring.

He stressed the importance of post-planting care, urging institutions, schools, communities, and individuals to take responsibility for nurturing the trees by watering them, protecting them from fire and other threats, and regularly monitoring their growth.

“For this reason, the 2026 edition of the Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative will place strong emphasis on post-planting care, monitoring and maintenance,” he stated.

The Tree for Life Initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader environmental conservation strategy aimed at restoring degraded lands, combating climate change, and safeguarding the country’s natural resources for future generations.
