Police Intercept 30 Bags of Smuggled Cocoa Beans in Central Region

Police in the Central Region intercepted a bus transporting 30 bags of undocumented cocoa beans suspected to be part of a smuggling syndicate, as investigations continue to uncover those behind the illegal trade.

The Central Regional Police Command has intercepted a suspected smuggling operation involving 30 bags of cocoa beans concealed in a Toyota Coaster bus.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Adu, the operation took place on Monday, July 21, around 4:20 p.m. at the Brimso checkpoint.

Officers stopped a vehicle with registration GR 8247-20 and uncovered bags of cocoa beans hidden inside.

The driver, 42-year-old Bernard Owusu Agyemang, was unable to produce any documentation and claimed he was acting on instructions from someone named Martin to deliver the beans to an unidentified woman in Mankessim.

DCOP Adu said investigations are underway to trace and apprehend members of the suspected smuggling syndicate. He called for public cooperation, assuring informants of complete anonymity.

The seized cocoa beans have been handed over to COCOBOD’s Cape Coast office, where Principal Quality Control Officer Maxwell Ntiamoah will oversee further assessment and necessary action.
