Bantama Member of Parliament, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has warned that it would be a political mistake for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to replace Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the party’s 2028 presidential primaries.

Speaking on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio with Kwame Tanko, Asenso-Boakye emphasized that the NPP flagbearership contest should not be about personal interests but about positioning the party to win national elections.

“It won’t make political sense. It will be a political error for NPP to change Dr. Bawumia,” he said, adding that Bawumia has marketed himself effectively and would be easy to promote due to his proper conduct, especially following the 2024 elections.

Asenso-Boakye highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s response to the 2024 election defeat, noting that despite some criticism from NPP members, he accepted the outcome peacefully—a quality he described as a significant advantage.

He stressed that changing the running mate at this stage would make promoting a new candidate more difficult, especially given the serious relationships Bawumia has built among party members and other contestants.

“Every election has its own dynamics,” Asenso-Boakye explained.

“The dynamics of the 2024 election were different, and the same will be true for 2028. Supporting Dr. Bawumia doesn’t mean the other candidates are bad; it is simply my choice.”

He further urged unity within the party, stressing that the NPP must come together to win the 2028 elections.

“If we don’t unite, it will do a great disservice to the country, because only the NPP introduces pro-poor policies and programs that drive Ghana’s development,” he said.
