The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on three teachers by military personnel at Adiewoso M/A Basic School in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Selasi Gloria Tali, on behalf of General Secretary Thomas Musah, the association described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.

GNAT is demanding that the military personnel involved be identified and held accountable, while the affected teachers receive proper medical care and compensation for the alleged abuse.

The association warned that it expects action to be taken by Monday, May 25, 2026, or it would take further steps in response to the matter.

According to reports, the incident occurred on April 30, 2026, when military personnel allegedly assaulted residents of Adiewoso following a confrontation linked to illegal mining activities near plantations belonging to Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL).

The Wassa West District branch of GNAT stated that soldiers from the 2BN barracks at Apremdo-Takoradi had initially visited the community to stop illegal mining activities around the rubber plantation area.

Following an alleged confrontation with suspected illegal miners, the military personnel reportedly returned to the town days later and assaulted several residents, including the teachers.

GNAT said the teachers attempted to explain that they had no connection to the illegal mining activities, but the soldiers allegedly ignored their pleas and physically assaulted them alongside the husband of one female teacher.

The teachers’ union also expressed concern over what it described as increasing acts of violence against teachers across the country.

The association referenced previous incidents, including attacks on teachers during examinations and violence recorded at school sports competitions, describing such actions as dangerous and unacceptable.

GNAT reiterated its commitment to protecting the safety and dignity of teachers and called for urgent measures to prevent further attacks on educators in the line of duty.
