More than 30 houses have collapsed after severe flooding swept through several island communities in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, leaving many residents homeless and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

The worst-hit communities include Laworshime, Hagodzi, Mamime, Songbe, and Agorbledokui, where rising floodwaters have submerged homes, farmlands, crops, and other properties. The flooding has disrupted livelihoods, particularly for residents who depend on farming and fishing.

Assembly Member for the Laworshime Electoral Area, Israel Mensah, described the destruction as devastating and appealed to the government and relevant agencies to provide immediate relief. He said many displaced families are sleeping in the open, staying with relatives, or remain stranded with limited access to food, clean water, and healthcare.

Mr. Mensah also expressed concern that the floods have cut off road access to the affected communities, forcing residents to rely on canoes to reach the mainland. He warned that the lack of life jackets has increased the risk of drowning, while stagnant floodwaters have heightened fears of outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne diseases.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Member of Parliament for Keta, Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, Municipal Chief Executive Wisdom Seade, and other authorities have visited the affected communities to assess the damage. Residents are appealing for emergency relief items, medical assistance, life jackets, and long-term measures to address the recurring flooding.
