Pape Gueye Suspends Senegal Career Until Coaching Staff Changes

Midfielder steps away from international football following Senegal's World Cup exit.

Story Highlights
  • Gueye has suspended his Senegal career.
  • Senegal lost 3-2 to Belgium after extra time.
  • He will return only after changes to the coaching staff.

Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has announced that he is taking a break from international football and will not represent the national team while the current coaching staff remains in charge.

The 27-year-old made the decision after Senegal’s dramatic exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Lions of Teranga, coached by Pape Thiaw, surrendered a two-goal lead before losing 3-2 to Belgium after extra time in their Round of 32 encounter.

Senegal appeared to be in control after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr gave them a 2-0 advantage. However, late strikes from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans forced extra time before Belgium secured victory through a controversial penalty converted by Tielemans in the 125th minute.

Gueye, who plays for Spanish club Villarreal, started the match but was substituted in the 66th minute for Lamine Camara. The midfielder has represented Senegal at both the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups.
