Alan Kyerematen, the presidential candidate for the Movement for Change, has voiced strong disapproval of former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s recent endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
In an interview with selected journalists on November 17, Kufuor urged Ghanaians to support Dr. Bawumia, describing him as the ideal candidate to lead the country.
He expressed confidence that Ghana’s economy could significantly improve under Bawumia’s leadership, citing his previous contributions to the Bank of Ghana during Kufuor’s presidency.
Kufuor stated, “Given the current global circumstances, I firmly believe that Ghana’s economy will experience significant improvement if Bawumia is elected as President. With divine guidance, he is capable of delivering on this promise, and I encourage you to support his candidacy.”
In response, Kyerematen criticized Kufuor’s endorsement as detrimental to his stature as a statesman. He argued that the endorsement has not only tarnished Kufuor’s reputation but has also sparked widespread criticism and backlash.
“Kufuor is my uncle and an elder, so I don’t want to publicly criticize him. However, his actions have created a significant blemish on his political career. Have you noticed the derogatory comments directed at him? The insults are rampant,” Kyerematen remarked. “He is highly respected in Ghana, so why engage in politics in this manner? His actions are concerning, and he needs to reconsider his stance. He knows what he’s doing.”
Kyerematen, who left the NPP to lead his newly-formed Movement for Change, is positioning himself as a viable alternative to both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
His remarks highlight the growing tensions within the political landscape as the December 2024 elections approach.
