The Electoral Commission (EC) Staff Union has petitioned the Chairperson of the Commission, Jean Mensa, calling for the suspension of the ongoing recruitment process for a new Director of Finance over concerns about transparency and adherence to due process.

In the petition signed by the Union’s Chairman, Richard Agorkor, the staff accused the EC Chairperson of initiating the recruitment exercise without the approval of the full Commission.

The Union stated that the Director of Finance position, which has remained vacant for about eight years, was advertised on June 10, 2026, with the application deadline set for June 25.

It raised concerns about the inclusion of a maximum age requirement of 55 years, alleging that the criterion could have been introduced to favour a particular candidate, Henry George Ashong, whom it claims has close ties with the Chairperson.

The Union argued that the appointment of a Director of Finance, a critical role responsible for managing the Commission’s finances, should first receive consideration and approval from the full Commission at a properly constituted meeting, in accordance with constitutional governance principles.

The petition also accused the EC Chairperson of gradually centralising administrative powers, leading to major policy and administrative decisions being taken without collective consultation.

The Union further claimed that the Commission has not held a formal meeting for nearly three years to deliberate on key policy and administrative issues, warning that the situation affects collective decision-making and undermines the institution’s governance structure.

The Staff Union is therefore urging the EC leadership to halt the recruitment process until the necessary procedures and consultations are followed.
