Former Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has urged public office holders to draw lessons from the ongoing investigation involving former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), Dennis Edward Aboagye, popularly known as Miracles.

Mr. Amaliba said the investigation should remind all public officials that occupying public office comes with a duty to account for their stewardship.

According to him, government appointees should ensure that public resources are managed responsibly so they do not face similar investigations after leaving office.

He stressed that every public official must recognise that accountability does not end with their tenure, adding that anyone entrusted with public resources should discharge their responsibilities transparently and in accordance with the law.

Mr. Amaliba also maintained that state investigative agencies have a responsibility to examine allegations of financial misconduct involving public funds, regardless of which political party is in government.

He argued that officials who fail to protect the public purse or are found to have misappropriated state resources should expect to be investigated once they leave office.

His comments come amid public debate over the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised the arrest, describing it as politically motivated.

Meanwhile, the NPP has cautioned that current government appointees could face similar scrutiny should the party return to power in 2028.

Speaking on July 13, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, described Mr. Aboagye’s arrest as an act of intimidation and a diversion from national issues. He also reminded current office holders that political power is temporary and urged them to be prepared to account for their stewardship if political fortunes change.
