President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport.
The project is expected to provide approximately 2,030 covered parking bays, alongside commercial, entertainment and hospitality facilities aimed at improving the passenger experience.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, President Mahama said the government’s vision goes beyond increasing passenger numbers to positioning Ghana as a preferred destination, convenient transit point and competitive aviation hub in Africa.
He noted that passenger traffic at the airport increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, making the expansion of airport infrastructure necessary to meet growing demand.
President Mahama also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening aviation infrastructure and improving connectivity while urging players in the sector to maintain professionalism, discipline and courtesy.
He disclosed that several ongoing airport development projects are being financed entirely from the balance sheets of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), without direct government funding.
The projects include the construction of a new GCAA control tower, refurbishment of Terminal 2, development of a transfer concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3, as well as the new parking and commercial complex at Terminal 3.
According to the President, the investments form part of broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s aviation infrastructure and strengthen the country’s position as a major aviation hub in Africa.
