Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, says he can no longer remain on the sidelines as the party continues to suffer electoral setbacks, declaring that the NPP is in crisis and urgently needs rebuilding.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tanko on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio during his visit to Kumasi, where he is engaging party executives and delegates across constituencies as part of his campaign for the National Chairmanship, Afoko said the current state of the party compelled him to seek a return to office.
“I have remained quiet and have not spoken until now, but I can no longer sit and watch the NPP decline,” he declared.
According to him, the NPP is facing one of the most difficult periods in its history and every committed member should be deeply concerned.
“The party is in crisis. We are in an emergency. If you are a genuine NPP member and truly believe in the party, you cannot be happy with where we are today,” he said.
Afoko recalled that before his suspension as National Chairman, the NPP held 169 parliamentary seats. He noted that the party’s representation later declined to 137 seats after the 2020 general election, forcing the government to rely on the support of the Independent Member of Parliament for Fomena to maintain its parliamentary majority and pass legislation.
He lamented that the party’s fortunes have deteriorated even further, saying the NPP now holds only 87 parliamentary seats.
“We are in trouble. Let’s rebuild the party,” he urged.
The former National Chairman explained that witnessing the party’s continuous decline inspired his decision to contest once again for the National Chairmanship.
To revive the NPP, Afoko unveiled what he calls the Three Rs agenda—Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture.
He said the first priority is to reunite the party by healing internal divisions, followed by rebuilding the party’s structures from the grassroots, before working collectively to recapture political power.
Afoko also appealed to party members to put aside personal differences and focus on the bigger goal of restoring the NPP.
“Power has no emotions. Everyone should let go of emotions and come together. That is the only way we can rebuild the party and return to power,” he stated.
