Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammy Awuku, has urged the government to focus on practical solutions to Ghana’s recurring flooding rather than public briefings and political commentary. He said Ghanaians expect decisive leadership and concrete interventions to address the country’s flood challenges.
Speaking on the issue, Mr. Awuku recalled the June 3, 2015 disaster, which claimed more than 150 lives, and noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) inherited the flooding problem after the 2016 elections. He argued that the previous Akufo-Addo administration introduced a comprehensive strategy to improve drainage systems and strengthen flood-control infrastructure.

The MP said several key drainage projects, including works along the N1 Highway, South Kaneshie, and the Nima–Paloma–Odaw drain, were initiated under the previous administration. He maintained that these projects formed part of broader efforts to reduce flooding in Accra.
Mr. Awuku also questioned the structure of the government’s Anti-Flood Task Force, expressing concern that the Interior Minister was presenting updates to Parliament despite not being a member of the committee. He argued that flood response should be coordinated by ministers directly responsible for local government and public works.
Concluding his remarks, Mr. Awuku said Ghanaians elect leaders to solve problems, not merely explain them. He called on the government to move beyond public statements and implement lasting measures to address the country’s perennial flooding.
