(VIDEO) Minority Demands Health Minister’s Briefing Over Post-Flood Disease Risks
Minority calls for swift health response and transparency in the management of flood relief funds.

- Minority seeks urgent Health Minister briefing.
- Disease outbreaks remain a major concern.
- GH¢300 million relief fund should be fully accounted for.
Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Efutu, has called for an urgent briefing by the Minister of Health, warning that the recent floods have created conditions that could lead to outbreaks of waterborne diseases.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament, Mr. Afenyo-Markin said stagnant floodwaters, uncollected refuse, and overflowing sanitation facilities pose serious public health risks. Referring to concerns raised by Nana Ayew Afriye, MP for Effiduase/Asokore, he cautioned that diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne infections could spread rapidly if swift action is not taken.

The Minority Leader urged the Health Minister to update Parliament on the government’s emergency response, including disease surveillance measures, the provision of clean water, sanitation interventions, medical supplies, and plans to quickly respond to any potential outbreaks in affected communities.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin also expressed the Minority’s support for emergency assistance to flood victims but stressed that the proposed GH¢300 million flood relief fund must be managed transparently. He called on the government to provide a clear breakdown of how the funds will be spent.
According to the Minority, separate accounts should be presented for the GH¢150 million allocated for direct humanitarian relief and the remaining funds earmarked for flood mitigation, to ensure accountability and public confidence in the relief effort.
