Story Highlights
  • Minority wants a parliamentary investigation.
  • Anti-Flood Task Force to face scrutiny.
  • Officials found negligent should be held accountable.

The Minority in Parliament has called for the establishment of a parliamentary committee to investigate the government’s preparedness for the recent floods in Accra, arguing that emergency relief alone is not enough to address what it describes as a preventable disaster.

Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said the proposed committee should examine the work of the government’s Anti-Flood Task Force, as well as the ministries and agencies responsible for flood prevention and disaster preparedness.

According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, the investigation should determine what actions the task force undertook since its creation, the amount of public funds allocated to it, how those resources were spent, and the flood mitigation measures implemented before the rainy season. He said the inquiry should also establish why those interventions failed to prevent or reduce the impact of the flooding.

The Minority Leader further called for accountability, insisting that any public officials found to have been negligent or to have failed in carrying out their responsibilities should face appropriate sanctions.
