The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called on a future government to revisit the circumstances surrounding the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, following the dismissal of her case by the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, June 25, Mr. Ahiagbah said the issues raised by Justice Torkornoo’s case extend beyond her personal situation and touch on broader concerns about governance and the independence of state institutions.

According to him, Justice Torkornoo’s decision to challenge the process leading to her removal would remain a significant moment in Ghana’s democratic history.

“Justice Torkornoo’s effort to defend her rights and her office will be remembered as a historic moment in Ghana’s democratic journey. It stands as an act of courage amid political persecution,” he stated.

Mr. Ahiagbah also accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of undermining the independence of state institutions, arguing that the development could have wider implications for the country’s democratic governance.

He further claimed that the former Chief Justice’s removal had created uncertainty among judges and public officials regarding their ability to carry out their duties independently without fear of repercussions.

The NPP Communications Director urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant in safeguarding democratic institutions and called for renewed efforts to protect judicial independence and constitutional governance ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“I sincerely hope that a future government will take all necessary steps to re-examine and address the clear injustice inflicted upon Justice Torkornoo. Ghana must not let this chapter close without accountability,” he said.
