Police Arrest 39-Year-Old Driver as Suspect in Shocking Death of UCC Student Innocentia Avinu

A 39-year-old man has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), whose lifeless body was discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.

The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was apprehended on Monday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following what authorities described as sustained intelligence-led operations.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the university’s hostel enclave.

Investigators say Michael Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, later transported Innocentia to Hutchland Beach, where she was allegedly last seen alive.

The arrest comes just days after the student’s body was found at the beach under circumstances that remain under active investigation.

According to police, one of the deceased’s roommates disclosed that Innocentia had called to inform her that she was stepping out to meet an acquaintance. She reportedly left her room dressed in casual clothing but failed to return, raising alarm among friends and family members.

Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the murder are ongoing and have assured the public that further updates will be communicated as the case progresses.

The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with the ongoing probe.
