At least five houses and nine vehicles have been buried following a mudslide triggered by heavy rocks cascading from the 600-metre Adaklu Mountain at Adaklu-Helekpe in the Volta Region.

The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, during a downpour that sent mud and debris sweeping into parts of the community.

Two residents — a man and a woman — were trapped in the rubble but were rescued by locals before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene. About 50 goats and other livestock are also reported to have died in the disaster, while displaced residents have since taken refuge with relatives and neighbours.

The Volta Regional Commander of the GNFS, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joseph Tetteh Freeman, confirmed that no fatalities were recorded. However, he ordered an immediate evacuation of residents living near the affected area and advised them to stay away for at least one week to allow geotechnical assessment.

He further cautioned residents against visiting their farms in the area, noting that the mudslide had spread across several acres. He also praised the quick response of community members in rescuing the two survivors before emergency teams arrived.

A team from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has also been deployed to assess the situation.

Officials note that this is not the first disaster in the area; in 2017, rock activity on Adaklu Mountain also caused debris to fall into the community, forcing residents to flee.
