Former Information Minister and Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has alleged that more than 16 members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been arrested by the government over social media activity since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took office.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah claimed the individuals were targeted for comments and posts on social media platforms that authorities allegedly found critical or unfavourable.

“Over sixteen NPP persons have been arrested for simply making comments on social media or posting things on social media that the government finds unpalatable,” he alleged.

He made the remarks while discussing the arrest and continued detention of the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe.

According to Mr Oppong Nkrumah, Abronye DC was initially arrested and denied bail before being detained continuously since last Wednesday.

He further claimed that family members, political associates, and lawyers representing Abronye DC have struggled to gain access to him since his detention.

The Ofoase-Ayirebi MP accused the government of using arrests, detention, and remand processes to silence critics and suppress opposing political voices.

“The whole idea is to intimidate people and ensure that everybody keeps quiet when they are failing on delivering on the promises they made to the Ghanaian people,” he said.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah stated that the NPP intends to challenge the alleged actions through both legal channels and public advocacy.

“We will use the platforms of public advocacy to call that out as well while we do what is necessary through the judicial system,” he added.

The government has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
