The Electricity Company of Ghana (Electricity Company of Ghana), under its Ashanti West operational zone, has commissioned 37 new transformers across the Greater Kumasi Metropolis in a major effort to strengthen and stabilise power supply.
The rollout, undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy (Ministry of Energy (Ghana)), forms part of a capital investment programme aimed at upgrading distribution infrastructure that had begun to operate at or near full capacity earlier this year.
Communities benefiting from the project include Ahinsan, Abuakwa, Adum, Danyame, Kokoben, Bibiani, Suame, Offinso, Trede SHS area, Kodie Apagya, Kayera, Hemang, Bantama Race Course Market, Pakyi No. 1, Brofoyedru, Mpasatia, Buoho, Adiebeba, Kokoso, and several others across the Ashanti Region (Ashanti Region).
According to ECG Ashanti West Regional General Manager, Ing. George Amoah, many of the upgraded transformers had been operating beyond safe load thresholds, contributing to intermittent outages, low voltage, and phase imbalances.
“Every transformer has its capacity and the maximum electricity load it can carry. Once we identified transformers operating above 70 per cent capacity, we upgraded some from 100kVA to 200kVA, and from 200kVA to 315kVA, while others received additional units to meet rising demand,” he explained.
The project—valued at GH₵10,944,456.02—also includes the extension of high-tension and low-voltage lines to ease pressure on existing infrastructure. ECG says the upgrades are expected to significantly reduce system losses, improve voltage stability, and enhance overall reliability.
Regional Engineer Ing. Emmanuel Osei Amoako described the intervention as critical, noting that Kumasi’s rapid urban and economic growth is driving increased electricity consumption.
“Kumasi and the Ashanti Region are expanding quickly. These transformers will help meet rising demand while we continue investing in infrastructure to improve service delivery,” he said.
He further disclosed that 36 additional transformers have been installed to replace faulty units in areas such as Twedie, Patasi Police Depot, Afia Kobi SHS, Denkyemuoso, and Ampabame Hills. An additional 35 transformers have also been approved for future installation.
Management of ECG has meanwhile cautioned against vandalism and illegal interference with power infrastructure, urging residents to report suspicious activities to help protect the network and ensure consistent electricity supply across the region.
