Party elders back Afoko’s experience as NPP eyes recovery ahead of 2028 elections

- Ashanti NPP Council of Elders praises Paul Afoko’s track record in party reorganisation
- Elders urge collaboration between Afoko and Mahamudu Bawumia to regain northern support
- Afoko calls for unity and collective responsibility following the party’s 2024 defeat
The Ashanti Regional Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party has reaffirmed confidence in the leadership abilities of Paul Awentami Afoko, pointing to his past role in strengthening the party’s internal structures and electoral performance.
At a high-level meeting in Kumasi, members of the Council described Afoko as a well-known figure within the party whose organisational strategies previously contributed to its growth. Several elders noted that his experience in party reorganisation had delivered tangible political gains.
Amid concerns about declining support for the NPP in Ghana’s five northern regions, the Council encouraged Afoko to take on a leading role in rebuilding the party’s presence there. They urged him to work closely with the party’s 2028 flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, to help restore voter confidence ahead of the next general elections.
The elders emphasized the need for coordinated leadership, expressing hope that a partnership between Afoko and Bawumia could reposition the party for future success.
In response, Afoko expressed appreciation for the endorsement and reiterated his commitment to the party despite previous internal challenges. He acknowledged the importance of the Ashanti Region to the NPP’s political strength and signaled his willingness to engage party stakeholders nationwide.
He also addressed concerns about the party’s performance in the 2024 elections, calling for unity rather than internal divisions. According to Afoko, party members must collectively accept responsibility and focus on rebuilding rather than assigning blame.
He further urged collaboration across all levels of the party, encouraging members to contribute their experience and ideas toward strengthening the NPP ahead of the 2028 polls.
As internal consultations continue, Afoko’s potential return to a top leadership role appears to be gaining momentum within sections of the party, particularly among influential figures in the Ashanti Region.
