At least 21 people, including eight children, have been killed after a war-damaged six-storey building collapsed in Gaza City, according to local rescuers and medics.
Dozens of people are also feared to be trapped beneath the rubble following the overnight collapse in the Tal al-Hawa area.
Witnesses told the BBC that the building had been left dangerously tilted after it was damaged by an Israeli strike more than a year ago. Displaced families had reportedly moved into the structure because of a shortage of available shelter.
Rescue teams, including Gaza’s Hamas-run Civil Defence agency, have been searching for survivors. UN agencies and an Egyptian rescue team have also joined the operation.
However, the rescue effort has been slowed by a lack of essential equipment. During the initial response, Civil Defence workers were forced to search through the debris using their bare hands.
