The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has launched a full-scale investigation into a fire outbreak at its Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region, which has disrupted electricity supply to several parts of the country.
The incident occurred on Thursday, April 23, and is reported to have damaged key components of the substation, raising concerns about the stability of power transmission in affected areas. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
In a statement, GRIDCo said preliminary assessments are underway to establish the origin of the blaze and assess the extent of damage. The company acknowledged the inconvenience caused to households, businesses, and essential services, noting that some regions are experiencing intermittent power supply.
GRIDCo explained that although such incidents are rare, they require swift and coordinated technical response to prevent wider disruptions to the national grid.
The Akosombo Substation, a key facility in Ghana’s power transmission network, plays a major role in distributing electricity from generation sources across the country.
The company assured the public that engineers and technical teams have been deployed to the site and are working continuously to stabilise the system.
Current efforts, according to GRIDCo, are focused on isolating affected components, restoring system balance, and gradually restoring power to impacted areas.
It further reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a reliable and resilient transmission network, stressing that safety protocols are being strictly observed during restoration work.
GRIDCo added that further updates will be provided as investigations continue and power supply is fully restored.
