The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is staging a demonstration in Sunyani today, Wednesday, April 22, to protest what it describes as the unjust arrest of some of its members.

The protest, dubbed the “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna Demo,” is being organised by the party’s Sunyani East Constituency, according to National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye.

He explained that the demonstration is a response to what the party sees as increasing intimidation and a clampdown on free speech.

“Following a series of what we consider unwarranted arrests, the party is organising this demonstration. We are not afraid of these actions or the criminalisation of free speech. We believe democracy is under attack,” he stated.

The protest comes in the wake of the arrest of the Sunyani East Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, who was picked up over allegations of offensive conduct, false publication, and the circulation of statements deemed likely to cause fear and panic.

Although he has since been granted bail of GH¢30,000 with two sureties, party officials argue that the incident raises serious concerns about freedom of expression and democratic rights.

The NPP maintains that the demonstration is meant to send a strong signal against what it describes as efforts to silence dissenting voices.
