The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has cautioned government appointees against interfering in chieftaincy matters, reminding them that political power is not permanent.
Speaking to the Asanteman Council on Monday, April 20, he expressed concern over growing political involvement in traditional leadership disputes in parts of the country, including Sampa and other affected communities.
He stressed that some individuals in authority behave as though their positions grant them unchecked control, warning that such power is only temporary and should be exercised responsibly.
The Asantehene also raised concerns about disregard for court rulings in certain communities such as Nkyeraa, Amantim, and parts of Asante Akyem, where competing claimants continue to assert authority despite legal decisions.
He cited the situation in Sampa, where tensions persist over chieftaincy recognition despite judicial rulings, noting that such defiance of authority undermines peace and order in traditional areas.
Otumfuo further questioned the silence of some traditional leaders in the Ashanti Region, urging them to be more proactive in defending the integrity of the traditional system.
Referencing historical figures such as Tweneboa Kodua and Yaa Asantewaa, he called on chiefs to uphold the dignity of the Asante Kingdom and not remain passive in the face of challenges affecting traditional governance.
He also reaffirmed his stance against any attempts to block chiefs from Bono and Bono East regions from paying homage to the Ashanti Kingdom.
