The Combined Kumasi Central Market Traders Union has given government a one-month ultimatum to instruct contractors to resume work on the stalled Phase Two of the Kejetia Market Redevelopment Project.

The union has warned that failure to meet the deadline could trigger mass demonstrations, including a possible return to trading inside the unfinished facility and the removal of barricades.

Speaking to the media, the Union’s Director of Operations, Daniel Otuo Acheampong, expressed frustration over the prolonged delay since traders were relocated in 2021 to make way for the project.

He noted that many traders relocated to the Racecourse site are struggling with poor roads, inadequate sanitation, weak lighting systems, and rising insecurity, all of which have significantly reduced customer turnout and affected their businesses.

He also raised concerns about conditions at sections of the old central market, where traders continue to face flooding, foul sewage odour, and waste disposal challenges from nearby Aboabo Lorry Station and Alabar.

Mr. Acheampong further disclosed that Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang had earlier assured the union that construction work would resume in March 2026. However, he said that promise has yet to be fulfilled.

He added that the union believes funding challenges may be responsible for the delay and is therefore calling on government to release funds from escrow accounts linked to Phase One, held at Fidelity Bank and Yaa Asantewaa Rural Bank, to support continuation of the project.

The union insists that government must ensure work resumes by the end of May 2026, warning that failure to act will leave them with no option but to embark on a massive protest.
